Sad News

I received an e-mail from my friend Evan today. Ryan Chighizola, a mutual friend from our days at Naropa University, and a wonderful poet, died of a heart attack Sunday night.

Evan sent along a recording that he and Ryan made one night in Ryan's basement. I can't get it to work in this post. So, instead, I decided to share a recording from the summer I first met Ryan at Naropa.

This recording is at the Naropa Audio Archive. It is from the summer of 1999 when Ryan, Evan, Laura, and a bunch of the rest of us started the two year MFA program. The recording is from the night when Michael Ondaatje and Robin Blaser gave readings. Ondaatje read a section from his piece called “Elimination Dance” - you can find a copy of the writing in “The Cinnamon Peeler.” But this recording, rather fittingly, ends with the line “Anyone with pain.”

Ryan’s passing makes me regret a number of things. First, that I didn’t make a better effort to stay in touch - and that I’m not making more of an effort to stay in touch with my grad school friends. Second, it makes me regret being slow about re-establishing those connections.
